You will know if you are reading this that words would never come close to capturing David’s unique qualities . Such a lively mind, often with a ‘left field’ take on things, a keen intelligence and sense of wonder about the world. David holds a special place in our family –a friendship with my late husband John of over 40 years and our son James’ godfather. David lived with John when he first moved north – probably the less said about that the better – conditions were spartan to say the least. But many happy hours were spent on the hills -sometimes even with the maps the right way up. There were family caving and camping trips as the boys – Simon, James and Tom -were growing up which have given us all so many funny and happy memories. Only David would think of cooking chips on a Trangia stove on top of Haystacks. And succeeding. Latterly John and David enjoyed a number of trips both in UK and Europe with battlefields as the theme. The ‘war tours’ were a source of fun and interest for them both -I think Maggi and I both felt relieved we were not expected to accompany them though as there was always some challenge or mishap to overcome. Hearing John and David have a conversation was always an entertainment – they were often at cross purposes but it would always end with lots of laughter. David, you have been such a kind and loyal friend to us all. Thank you. We shall miss you . The Archer family
