Dedicated to the memory of David Rome

We have created this Tribute Page in memory of David Rome.

David was a much loved husband, father, father-in-law, grandad and friend, who passed away far too soon!  We have so many happy memories of his time with us, and we are sure you have too.  We hope you will share some of your memories on this site and make a donation to Prostate Cancer Research in his memory.  David had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2014.

David had many interests and he had an inquiring mind - always wanting to find out more about nature and the world around him.  He loved the outdoors - from being completely alone in large mountain expanses, to dissecting the smallest of flowers to observe cell structure under a microscope.  He sometimes did his own experiments, such as the time he tried to replicate primordial soup in a tank in our conservatory for several years, to see if he could encourage small atoms of life to develop!  He only gave up on this when we put the house up for sale and we told him his smelly swamp would discourage prospective purchasers.

We have chosen Prostate Cancer Research as this was a charity and cause he supported.  He also sponsored research at Leeds University where they are developing “bubble technology” to target and destroy specific prostate cancer cells.

We have shared a few photos from the archives.  The last photo was taken the day before his illness and shows him wearing his granddaughter’s Minnie Mouse sunglasses at Chester Zoo.  He did this to make her laugh - she did!

Thoughts

I first met David back in 2012 and worked with him as a volunteer, both at Dibbinsdale & then Eastham Country park. I couldnt help but be impressed by Davids personality & character. A thoroughly hard working chap, who you could have a real laugh with, but at same time be able to discuss in depth just about any topic. He was inspirational, always out on his bike or doing his voluntary work, regardless of his illness and never complaining. I once joked that he should be on the Yorkshire Tea tv adverts, with the Brownlee brothers! I'll always remember having a laugh with him about the likes of Lord Flashheart in Blackadder Goes forth, or David's impression of the German assault on Arnhem Bridge, from the film Operation Market Garden, while he was standing on the top of muffin (the atv at Dibbinsdale). Personally, I've struggled with my mental health & in particular with social anxiety. Volunteering was and still is a big thing for me, but I must say that working with David made it so much more enjoyable & interesting. Taken too soon & will be dearly missed. I really feel for Margaret and Simon. Richard

Affectionately known as 'Big Dave' to me. Thank you for being so generous and giving me your time. My favourite memory is the holiday to Barcelona, but also numerous trips to football matches. Thank you for always making Simon and I laugh. Tom x

I first met David 40 years ago as a colleague at Colman’s in Norwich. Ever since then, even though our lives took us to different parts of the world, David was a dear and wonderful friend, who inspired me with his immense knowledge on so many different subjects (from Food Engineering to the Environment). David was a lovely person with a warm heart filled with humility and he had a fine sense of humour and a cheeky smile. Nimi and I enjoyed our friendship with David and Maggi and we will miss David a lot, but our good memories of David will linger on.
